Psoriasis (a skin condition)

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, scaling and itch. The condition is often hereditary. Psoriasis is not contagious. Factors that trigger the condition are damaged skin, infections and stress. The typical plaques can occur anywhere on the body, including nails, palms and the soles of the feet.

Patients with a severe form of psoriasis sometimes experience shame about their condition.

Alongside dietary and lifestyle advice, acupuncture is an effective support to the treatment of psoriasis. Acupuncture can improve the blood flow to the skin and minimise the itch. The treatment is also effective against additional stress. In severe cases of psoriasis, the combination of acupuncture with Chinese herbs (Lingzhi) is advised.
